Herzing University – Toledo First to Offer SAP Software Solution in Business Courses

High-tech business management solutions help companies function efficiently, and Herzing University – Toledo can now be an important part of the ramp-up process. The Toledo location is proud to be the first SAP University Alliance Institution in Lucas County.

SAP is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system popular with organizations for managing the functions of accounting, human resource, facility planning and more. Through the SAP University Alliance, students will learn to use SAP, along with other software applications, to gain skills that often increase marketability in the business world.

“SAP software solutions are used by many major corporations here in Toledo and across the world” said Greg Guzmán, campus president. “SAP education has now been integrated into our business curriculum. Students learn about SAP and graduate with skills employers want.”

Herzing University – Toledo students who complete 30 percent of their core coursework receive a SAP Student Recognition award, a nice addition to any portfolio.

“We are always on the lookout for ways to help our students stand out,” Guzmán said. “Offering the opportunity to learn this relevant business suite tool makes good sense.”

Just the Ticket: Herzing Students Wow Potential Employers at Job Fair

Job Fair

On Friday, December 2, 2011, over 40 students took part in a campus job fair training event called 911 Emergency Job Fair. According to the event organizer Business Program Chair, Angela River, “The urgency of the event was to promote student awareness of necessary interviewing skills now.”

Students who attended met with over a dozen employment service experts to critique their interviewing skill set. Various stations throughout campus offered mock-interviews, resume critiques, and online employment database registration assistance.

Job Fair

According to Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Management Analyst Supervisor, Tim Schneider, “The students were very impressive.” The students who were the most impressive earned the right to a golden ticket. The golden ticket allowed students to come back the following week and actually interview with several hiring employers on campus.

Nearly 20 students then returned to campus on Friday, December 9 and used their golden ticket to meet with employers from the health, business, and technology fields. “The interviews went really well and, even more so, were excellent preparation and training” according to medical billing and insurance coding student Melissa Buzza. Herzing Toledo Career Development Specialist, Amy Wexler, said several of the students have already been contacted for second interviews.

Toledo College President Aims to Give Back to the Community

He talks the talk because he has walked the walk. The first and only Latino university president in the city of Toledo, Greg Guzmán used education to change his life. Guzmán, president of Herzing University-Toledo, appeared on cable network television show Voces Latinas TV Magazine in a segment that aired Thursday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 30.

Guzmán talked with host Tony Rios during the Northwest Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's sixth annual Business Expo & Job Fair, held at the University of Toledo student union.

“Growing up I never realized how poor we were until I went off to college,” Guzmán said. “It was then I realized the opportunity in front of me, as well as the obstacles. I could handle the work but paying for college was another story. Luckily, the federal student aid programs provided me with a chance. It is a true honor to be providing students with the same chance I had, in an environment built to help them succeed.”

More than two dozen Herzing students attended the event, hoping to meet with potential employers. They learned how to use state-provided job search services and discovered what areas in the market are hiring.

Guzmán and other Herzing faculty were there to offer support.

“We want Toledo residents to know that we are their community school,” Guzmán told Rios. “We offer diplomas, associate and bachelor’s degrees in many areas of interest. In fact, we are proud to be one of only two baccalaureate granting institutions in Toledo.”

Herzing University – Toledo Offers Free College Preparation Course to Help Potential Students Gain Skills to Succeed

Program Offered Nationwide by Herzing University to Help Connect People with Careers, as Unemployment Remains High, but Skills Shortages Emerge for Employers

TOLEDO (October 5, 2011) – Herzing University – Toledo announced today that it is offering a new, free College Preparation Course for individuals who have thought about continuing their education but aren’t quite sure they’re ready. The program is part of a nationwide initiative by Herzing University to lend a hand to individuals who need additional education and training to improve their career potential, but are reluctant to make the commitment due to fears about everything from study skills to work-life balance.

“We hear from so many potential students who really want to pursue additional education to help them move up to better jobs and careers, but they really need the support and confidence to proceed and make that investment in themselves,” said Renée Herzing, president of Herzing University. “We’re making this investment of free classes for students nationwide across all 12 locations as well as Herzing University Online, in an effort to help both individuals and employers to succeed, with skills and education that are aligned with today’s workforce.”

Although the unemployment rate in the Toledo area remains high, employers are concerned about the inability to find skilled employees to fill jobs in many of the high-growth career areas where Herzing University – Toledo focuses its curriculum. The flexibility offered by Herzing University – Toledo to take courses on campus, online or a combination of both, is an important factor for working adults, particularly those with young families.

“This free college preparation course is designed to help everyone from high school students who want to see if small class sizes and one-on-one attention will help them be successful in college, to working parents who are concerned about whether they can succeed in juggling the demands of work, school and family,” said Greg Guzmán, campus president of Herzing University – Toledo. “We’re giving them the opportunity to see what it’s like to learn on campus or online, and find a program that fits their interests and lifestyle.”

The free College Preparation Course is offered as an eight-week program on-campus for individuals who prefer classroom instruction. For those who prefer the flexibility of online classes, the College Preparation Course is also offered as a four-week online class.

Limited space is available for the next class, which begins on October 31. Potential students can find more information and register for one of the free courses at www.herzing.edu/freeclass or by calling 1-800-596-0724.

New Career Breathes Breath of Fresh Air to Former Auto-Industry Welder

Student Chris Welliver spent many years in the automotive industry as a welder.

Chris Welliver

He worked temporary jobs, and while the jobs were rewarding, they brought with them a danger that has turned out to be a permanent part of every breath this 31-year-old man takes.

Sidelined on and off by unusual exhaustion for more than three years, Welliver underwent many tests. Eventually his overall lack of stamina was diagnosed -- heat-induced asthma due to lung poisoning.

But this former soldier didn’t let the health issue stall his engine. He simply shifted gears.

In the spring of 2010, Welliver was admitted to Herzing University - Toledo for workforce retraining in the field of medical assisting. “I chose to return to school and Herzing University was the right fit,” Welliver said. “The classes are small and the teachers are very helpful.”

Today, the former welder has forged a new career path.

Even though he spent a great deal of time as a frustrated patient, Welliver’s goals involved spending more time in the healthcare realm -- but this time, from the other side of the stethoscope, helping others. “I’m looking for a career with stability,” he said, “and I’m leaning towards becoming a nurse.”

Welliver hopes to complete his associate degree in December, which will enable him to “get his foot in the door” in the healthcare field. In the meantime, he is living life and doing what he can to generate interest for the university he loves. Recently this involved throwing caution to the wind, or at least driving like it.

In his spare time Welliver races demolition derby cars.

He asked Toledo campus president Greg Guzman if Herzing University would sponsor his car in an upcoming fair. “It was a way to give the school some advertising,” Welliver said.

“It was truly one of the strangest sponsorship requests,” Guzman said. “Needless to say we had to do it.” Welliver’s “Herzing Blood Mobile” blasted the competition.

Toledo, Ohio – August 25, 2011

Toledo – Ohio State Representative Teresa Fedor (D) watched students draw blood and perform an EKG and other health screening procedures when she toured campus on Thursday, August 25, 2011. Invited by Herzing University – Toledo’s Student Government Association, (SGA), Fedor dropped in to talk about the role of non-traditional students and higher education in the state’s economic recovery.

“Ohio’s economy was built on an educated workforce,” Fedor said. “[Workforce] is still the number one reason that a company uses to decide whether to move to or stay in Ohio. Herzing University is an important component in that system. They are helping keep our young people educated and employable.”

Fedor oversees Ohio’s 47th district, which includes the campus. Members of Herzing’s SGA group presented Fedor with a plaque in thanks for her continued support of career colleges.

Recruiters from several federal agencies came to campus from 6 to 8 pm Monday, June 6 to underscore the importance of a degree in criminal justice when applying for certain federal jobs. Representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Secret Service, State Highway Patrol, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and several law enforcement sectors answered questions and talked with the approximately 60 students in attendance.

“A student’s education will greatly improve their chances at being considered for a federal position,” said Robert Allshouse, OPEER investigator with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“The simple fact that someone has earned an education gives an employer the notion that the student has the ability to commit, focus, strive and learn. Almost 99 percent of the executives within the government or private sector will have been educated.”

Recruiters repeatedly expressed how impressed they were with the Herzing University – Toledo students.

“These students displayed a confident and energetic personality,” Allshouse said. “They acted and dressed professionally, maintained eye contact, were focused on the conversation, asked important questions, displayed leadership and knowledge and were very appreciative. I hope to soon see them in the workplace!”

Black History Month Celebration and Student Soul Food Cook-Off

Herzing University - Toledo celebrated Black History month with a theatrical re-enactment of "Comin' for to Carry Me Home" by Dr. Imelda Hunt and the New Works Writers Series. The re-enactment was based on interviews, 1936 - 1938, from the Federal Writers Project of former enslaved Africans on the plantations of the South and in Northern American households. Historians such as Lawrence Levine has said of narratives that "the representations of speech in the narratives are a pervasive and forceful reminder that these documents are not only a record of a time that was already history when they were created: they are themselves irreducibly historical, the products of a particular time and particular places in the long and troubled mediation of African-American culture by other Americans."

Students concluded the re-enactment with a celebration of soul food and time-relevant cooking on February 24, 2011, sponsored by Herzing University and the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) student organization.
