IV Certification Lecture

This course is designed for anyone looking to gain knowledge or expand their skills in intravenous (IV) therapy. This class prepares participants for initiating and/or maintaining common intravenous therapies. Classroom topics will include legal aspects, review of vein anatomy and physiology, indications for IV therapy, infection control, nursing management, equipment complications, parenteral therapy including TPN/PPN, blood and blood components. Nursing assessment, documentation and common IV drugs will be discussed. Care of central lines and central line dressings will be covered. This course encompasses minimum competencies for Florida IV certification and the regulations and scope of practice rules. Upon completion of this course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for Intravenous Therapy.

IV Certification Skills Lab

Coinciding with lecture will be 8 hours of skills lab. The skills lab provides an opportunity for the RN/LPN to demonstrate theoretical knowledge related to IV Therapy. Practice will include insertion techniques, set up of primary and secondary IV lines via gravity, pumps and intermittent infusion devices. Opportunities to practice IV therapy utilizing needleless systems and saline locks will be available. IV administration of fluids and medications via central lines, including PICC lines will be practiced, as well as central line dressing changes. Proper discontinuation of IV Therapy will be included.
