Herzing University – Kenosha Offers Free College Preparation Course to Help Potential Students Gain Skills to Succeed
Program Offered Nationwide by Herzing University to Help Connect People with Careers, as Unemployment Remains High, but Skills Shortages Emerge for Employers
KENOSHA (October 5, 2011) – Herzing University – Kenosha announced today that it is offering a new, free College Preparation Course for individuals who have thought about continuing their education but aren’t quite sure they’re ready. The program is part of a nationwide initiative by Herzing University to lend a hand to individuals who need additional education and training to improve their career potential, but are reluctant to make the commitment due to fears about everything from study skills to work-life balance.
“We hear from so many potential students who really want to pursue additional education to help them move up to better jobs and careers, but they really need the support and confidence to proceed and make that investment in themselves,” said Renée Herzing, president of Herzing University. “We’re making this investment of free classes for students nationwide across all 12 locations as well as Herzing University Online, in an effort to help both individuals and employers to succeed, with skills and education that are aligned with today’s workforce.”
Although the unemployment rate in the Kenosha area remains high, employers are concerned about the inability to find skilled employees to fill jobs in many of the high-growth career areas where Herzing University – Kenosha focuses its curriculum. The flexibility offered by Herzing University – Kenosha to take courses on campus, online or a combination of both, is an important factor for working adults, particularly those with young families.
“This free college preparation course is designed to help everyone from high school students who want to see if small class sizes and one-on-one attention will help them be successful in college, to working parents who are concerned about whether they can succeed in juggling the demands of work, school and family,” said Rebecca Abrams, campus president of Herzing University – Kenosha. “We’re giving them the opportunity to see what it’s like to learn on campus or online, and find a program that fits their interests and lifestyle.”
The free College Preparation Course is offered as an eight-week program on-campus for individuals who prefer classroom instruction. For those who prefer the flexibility of online classes, the College Preparation Course is also offered as a four-week online class.
Limited space is available for the next class, which begins on October 31. Potential students can find more information and register for one of the free courses at www.herzing.edu/freeclass or by calling 1-800-596-0724.

Business Leaders, Students, Faculty Address Issues on campus
Kenosha – Members of the 2011 Herzing University-Kenosha Spring Advisory Board gathered at noon on Friday, May 20 on campus for lunch and a whole lot more.
A total of 18 employers and 14 students were in attendance, along with representatives from the Business, Graphic Design, Medical Assisting, Medical Billing & Coding, and Technology programs.
“The group met in our largest classroom,” said Terri Storch, Director of Career Development. “We did introductions, went over the agenda, and then broke into the industry-specific groups. Program chairs led the discussions.”
Herzing University welcomes community business leaders who team up with teachers and staff in order to share information and network. The advisory board:
- Reviews and provides specific feedback on curriculum
- Offers advice about marketing programs, encouraging student participation, tracking industry trends, and obtaining new internship opportunities
- Share ideas about how Herzing University can work with grads to discover skills they may need for successful employment
It was a busy, activity-filled afternoon.
“Our program chairs spoke and then led a campus tour,” Storch said.
“We even had some of our medical assisting students giving blood pressure checks.”
Campus president Rebecca Abrams said the board is a vital link when connecting the community and student success.
“Our bi-annual advisory board meetings are extremely important to us, because of the valuable input and feedback that the attendees provide,” Abrams said. “These professionals are employed in the industries that we provide graduates for, so this partnership is equally beneficial to our institution, our community, and our students.”
Medical Billing and Coding Class Sets Record as First
Graduates L to R: Christina Borst, Diane Kosloske, Shirley Moore, Kathy Spencer, and Linda Vivian.
April, 2011
The first Medical Billing and Insurance Coding class has successfully earned the title of Certified Coding Associates at Herzing University-Kenosha. Students received their diplomas on April 26, 2011.
“This is a great achievement,” said Quinten Buechner, Medical Billing and Insurance Coding Program Chair. “It is a standard that future students will strive to match.”
The CCA distinguishes coders by establishing the coder’s commitment to accurate coding and billing and demonstrates the coding students’ competencies in all settings, including hospitals and physician practices. Based upon job analysis standards and state-of-the-art test construction, the CCA was created through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), to meet potential employers' needs for knowledgeable staff. The CCA designation has been a nationally accepted standard of achievement in the health information management field since 2002 and is the only credential worldwide that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
“This credential demonstrates Herzing University’s commitment to quality education and obligation to our students,” Buechner said. “We see our mission as preparing non-typical and typical students to achieve proficiency and excellence in whatever field they choose.”
Becky Burdette, Ben Cater and Phillip Lee work on assembling the care packages. Vivian Walker and JJ Marx write messages inside holiday cards for the soldiers.
Herzing student/veteran Justin Bonner takes a moment to help Sam Pernsteiner tape a box closed after filling it with goodies for the troops.
