Five Hundred Reasons to Persevere in College

Imagine Scholarship Award.

She went back to school in 2009 but ran into some roadblocks and had to withdraw.

Determined not to let this stop her, this 51-year-old wife and mother of two re-enrolled. Then she worked hard – all the way to the honor roll. Last November, Cathy Tyler Jackson learned she won the Imagine America Adult Excellence Award of $500.

“I was truly honored to win,” Jackson said. “I never win anything.”

The Imagine America Adult Excellence Scholarship Awards are funded through the contributions made by MaxKnowledge and the 21st Century Workforce Fund. Awardees must be nominated. They have to be recommended by a faculty/administrator, have completed at least one term in a selected course of study, have a 96 percent or higher attendance record, and have a 3.5 or higher grade point average. Jackson met those requirements and then some.

Jackson maintained her place on Herzing University – Atlanta’s honor roll while going to school, working part-time in office management, and teaching Sunday school. She has more than 20 years of experience in public relations and is earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Her graduation date is April 2013. Active in her community, Jackson is the Dean of the Congress of Christian Education, an Auxiliary of the Atlanta Missionary Baptist Association until 2014, serves on School Council at Meadowview Elementary as Business Partner, and is the treasurer of Gresham Park Community Association.

“It is exceptional that Ms. Jackson has been on the Dean’s List for three semesters, demonstrating that she has the ability to manage her time quite well among her profession, her family obligations, and her college studies,” said Dr. Dennis Morrow, program manager of Herzing University – Atlanta’s business department.

Time is valuable, Jackson says, and it should be spent wisely. Jackson lost her parents within 10 months of each other in 2010. And fulfilling her education is something her mother would have wanted.

“I am more focused and mature now,” Jackson said. “If I have questions about an assignment or understanding a concept, I have the confidence and assurance to reach out to my instructors for clarity. I also like to encourage my colleagues to reach out for assistance if they need it.”

Jackson hopes to eventually apply her knowledge, skills, and abilities to a position back in corporate America. “I am looking forward to using the knowledge I have gained through my studies to grow,” she said. “Obtaining my bachelor’s degree will solidify it.”

Two members of the highly regarded Tuskegee Airmen visited the Atlanta Campus where they participated in the Lunch & Learn program in celebration of Black History Month.

During their visit, the Tuskegee Airmen shared their experiences that left students with positive affirmations of self-worth.

The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African American pilots, along with support personnel, who comprised the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Their contribution to the war effort eventually led to the desegregation of the United States military in 1948.

Herzing University – Atlanta Offers Free College Preparation Course to Help Potential Students Gain Skills to Succeed

Program Offered Nationwide by Herzing University to Help Connect People with Careers, as Unemployment Remains High, but Skills Shortages Emerge for Employers

ATLANTA (October 5, 2011) – Herzing University – Atlanta announced today that it is offering a new, free College Preparation Course for individuals who have thought about continuing their education but aren’t quite sure they’re ready. The program is part of a nationwide initiative by Herzing University to lend a hand to individuals who need additional education and training to improve their career potential, but are reluctant to make the commitment due to fears about everything from study skills to work-life balance.

“We hear from so many potential students who really want to pursue additional education to help them move up to better jobs and careers, but they really need the support and confidence to proceed and make that investment in themselves,” said Renée Herzing, president of Herzing University. “We’re making this investment of free classes for students nationwide across all 12 locations as well as Herzing University Online, in an effort to help both individuals and employers to succeed, with skills and education that are aligned with today’s workforce.”

Although the unemployment rate in the Atlanta area remains high, employers are concerned about the inability to find skilled employees to fill jobs in many of the high-growth career areas where Herzing University – Atlanta focuses its curriculum. The flexibility offered by Herzing University – Atlanta to take courses on campus, online or a combination of both, is an important factor for working adults, particularly those with young families.

“This free college preparation course is designed to help everyone from high school students who want to see if small class sizes and one-on-one attention will help them be successful in college, to working parents who are concerned about whether they can succeed in juggling the demands of work, school and family,” said Frank Webster, campus president of Herzing University – Atlanta. “We’re giving them the opportunity to see what it’s like to learn on campus or online, and find a program that fits their interests and lifestyle.”

The free College Preparation Course is offered as an eight-week program on-campus for individuals who prefer classroom instruction. For those who prefer the flexibility of online classes, the College Preparation Course is also offered as a four-week online class.

Limited space is available for the next class, which begins on October 31. Potential students can find more information and register for one of the free courses at www.herzing.edu/freeclass or by calling 1-800-596-0724.

March 22, 2010

ATLANTA – The American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates recently granted approval to the Legal Studies program at Herzing University – Atlanta, making it one of just five ABA-approved paralegal education programs in the state of Georgia.

“We are excited and proud to receive this strong endorsement from the ABA, which is a testament to our commitment to providing a quality, relevant education to our students,” said Frank Webster, campus president of Herzing University – Atlanta. “The American Bar Association approval will be a great asset to our paralegal program graduates as they seek employment in law firms and corporations in Atlanta and around the state of Georgia,” he added.

The ABA approval process included an August 2009 site inspection and interviews with faculty, administration, students and graduates of Herzing University – Atlanta’s Legal Studies program. The team of evaluators was impressed and gave a positive recommendation to the next level of the ABA approval process, which culminated in the approval granted at the ABA mid-year meeting in February 2010.

Herzing Paralegal Graduate Meets Nancy Pelosi

Alumna Joan Russell selected to attend “Hill Day” in Washington D.C.

HERZING UNIVERSITY – ATLANTA (March 12, 2010) – When Joan Russell chose to complete her Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies degree at the Herzing University – Atlanta campus, she never dreamt it would lead to her meeting the Speaker of the House of Representatives. “I’ve been a big fan of Nancy Pelosi for a long time,” said Ms. Russell, who graduated in April 2009 and is employed as a Paralegal for the Director of Clayton County Public Defender’s Office in Jonesboro. “This trip was the most wonderful experience of my life.” she stated.

Prior to a meeting with Congressman Steve Kagen (D-WI) in the Senate Building, Ms. Russell’s excitement at recognizing the House Speaker prompted Ms. Pelosi to extend an invitation to accompany her in the service elevator for a quick chat. They discussed Russell’s background and her participation in the “Hill Day” event. “I will never, ever, ever forget it!” exclaimed Russell.

Russell was one of five Herzing University students and alumni chosen to accompany Chancellor Henry Herzing and President Renée Herzing on the third annual “Herzing on The Hill” event to discuss the merits of career education with members of Congress on Capitol Hill. Specifically, the group sought to thank Congress members for their support of funding for education and urge them to create policies that are more favorable in allowing students the ability to choose the career education that’s right for them. This event was held in conjunction with the Career College Association’s annual “Hill Day.”

“I went to Washington D.C. in support of career colleges,” Russell stated. “Career colleges, such as Herzing University, have played a major role in my life as well as my daughter’s life. As a result of the education I received at Herzing, I am now working in my field with an excellent salary.”

In addition to meeting with Congressman Kagen, the group also met with Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), legislative aides from both the Senate and the House representing Georgia, Minnesota, and Nebraska, and attended a luncheon where keynote speaker Congressman John Kline (R-MN), who serves as ranking Republican on the 50-member Education and Labor

“Going to Washington D.C. these last three years with our students and alumni is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had with the University,” commented Herzing University President Renée Herzing. “I never fail to be impressed by the incredible caliber of our graduates and what they are doing with their careers.”
